The entry of the Czech Republic to the European Union

On April 28th 2004, the Czech National Bank has issued a commemorative coin with nominal value of CZK 2,500.00 having gold centre and silver annulus and a commemorative silver CZK 200.00 coin.

The bi-metal coin has a gold centre, which is 999.9 pure, weighs 7.776 g and measures 16 mm in diameter; the silver annulus is 999 pure. The overall weight of the coin is 31.104 g, diameter is 40 mm and the thickness of the centre, as well as the annulus is 2,8 mm. The edge is smooth with a frieze "ČNB * Ag 0.999 * 23,328 g * Au 999.9 * 7,776 g *". The coin’s author, which is struck in proof quality, is the academic sculptor Mr. Zbyněk Fojtů. The face of the coin in the golden centre shows the nominal value of the coin with the monetary unit abbreviated and surrounded by 12 stars of the European Union. The name of the issuing state is near the upper part, (the edge) of the annulus together with free grouping of the heraldic animals of the national Coat of Arms. The open circle of the remaining annulus contains dynastic and state’s Coats of Arms, corresponding with the growth and development of the Czech statehood. The depiction is completed with the mint’s hallmark. On the reverse of the coin, among the five-pointed stars is a date "1. 5. 2004", and the bottom part of the annulus are three lines saying “entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union.” The remaining space lists 17 significant dates in Czech history. Above the gold centre in the upper part of the annulus are the initials of the coin’s author.

Each coin comes with a free catalogue card of postcard format. The card for the silver coin is in blue colour, with a relief of a dry seal, which is the case for both cards. The card for the bi-metal coin is chalk white with blue marbling; the coin is also depicted as a relief in so-called “dry seal” technique, in silver and gold colours. The text on both cards is bilingual – in the Czech and English languages.

Set of  Gold Commemorative Coins

For 2001, Czech National Bank has prepared the issue of the first two of a series of ten gold commemorative coins, devoted to the thousand-year development of Czech architecture. The first coin, dedicated to the Romanesque style and the rotunda in Znojmo, will be issued for the opening of the exhibition Ten Centuries of Architecture. The second coin, dedicated to the Early Gothic and the monastery in Vyšší Brod, will be issued at the end of the exhibition. Individual coins with other themes will be released two times a year, until 2005.

"Architecture was originally one of five classical arts. However, it is also a complex phenomenon that is difficult to understand in spite of the fact that every man meets it and uses it every day. We suppose that the way to understanding architecture leads through the acquaintance of its development. Czech architecture is not only "a suitable textbook", but also a desired part of the knowledge of civilized man. In consequence, we have decided to implement a project that will let a man into the story of architecture and will let him see the history that surrounds him in an unusual way."  Ing. arch.
